The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) is the world’s largest archive of computer readable social science data. ICPSR provides Web access to data files and documentation for use with statistical software, such as SAS, SPSS, and Stata. The ICPSR data holdings contain some 6,300 studies and 500,000 files that cover a wide range of social science areas such as population, economics, education, health, social and political behavior, social and political attitudes, history, crime, aging, and substance abuse. A wonderful page of interesting tables and charts showing how Consumer Price Index (CPI) affects prices and nearly everything else that has money as a base. There are conversion factors to determine the value of dollars of the years 1774 to estimated 2028 in dollars of the years 2018, 2017,2016, 2015, 2014, 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010, 2009, 2008 ,2007, 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996, and 1995. A database includes:

Table One file contains all Table 1 non-derivative transaction and holdings information filed on Forms 3, 4, 5. Coverage January 1986 to Present.

Table Two file contains all Table 2 derivative transaction and holdings information filed on Form 3, 4, 5. The data in this includes open market derivatives transactions as well as information on the award, exercise, and expiration of stock options. coverage January 1996 to present.

Form 144 File contains the Proposed Sale file is derived from Form 144. This data includes the expected data of sale, the number of securities to be sold, the estimated market value of the proposed sales, and the name of the executing broker. Coverage January 1986 to present.

The Average Returns file contains the information relating to how a stock has historically performed following an insider’s transactions. The file includes average 3-month and 6-month buy and sell returns as well as the number of historic buy and sell decisions for each individual insider. Coverage June 1996 to present.

Amendment Concordance file links an amended filing to its original filing by way of DCN. This prevents double counting by allowing users to see which original filing is being replaced. The amendment concordance file is a full refresh every day. Please note: not all amended filings are included in this file, only those that meet our concordance criteria. Coverage October 2002 to present.

The Institutional Holdings data source is the actual 13f form filed with the SEC on a quarterly basis by money managers/management companies. The 13f data is aggregated to a manager level. Securities Class Action Settlements covers 19 years and contains information on more than 5,900 cases. These files represent a one-time snapshot of the entire SCAS database (all fields and all cases including Federal, State, International and SEC Disgorgements) as of March 2011.  These files contain information on pending and historical securities-related class action lawsuits and SEC settlements from Securities Class Action Services, LLC.

* CaseSecurity.zip: this is a zipped, pipe-delimited text file that contains a list of Security Class Action lawsuits. CaseSettlement.zip: this is a zipped, pipe-delimited text file that contains a list of SEC Class Action Settlements.

* SCAS_Data_Definitions04_14_2011.xls: this is a data dictionary that provides descriptions for each of the fields in the CaseSecurity and CaseSettlement files in Excel format.

International Debt Statistics presents external debt and financial flow data for the 120 economies that report public and publicly-guaranteed debt to the World Bank’s Debtor Reporting System. The time series for 216 indicators run from 1970 to 2012, with contractual obligations data projected for another 10 years. International Debt Statistics also includes topical country data and regional aggregates showing time series in table and chart form. The topics are: external debt, aggregate net resource flows (long term), net flows and transfers on debt, net financial flows from multilateral institutions, and international bond issues (new and outstanding).  (Source: Davis Library)

International Financial Statistics (IFS) is a great source international and country statistics on all aspects of international and domestic finance for more than 200 countries. Data available includes: exchange rates, international liquidity, international banking, money and banking, interest rates, prices, production, international transactions, government accounts, and national accounts. Data may be available monthly, quarterly, or annually depending of the specific data element in question. Many of the data time series start in 1948. Data is downloadable in Excel and other formats.

International Financial Statistics is provided by the International Monetary Fund.

OptionMetrics’s IvyDB is a comprehensive source of historical price and implied volatility data for the U.S. equity and index options markets. Ivy DB OptionMetrics contains historical prices of options and their associated underlying instruments, correctly calculated implied volatilities, and option sensitivities.

The database is specifically designed for empirical research. Data can be downloaded into a variety of database, spreadsheet, and statistical software packages and this allows for very sophisticated research and analysis on all aspects of options investments including backtesting  trading strategies and evaluating risk models.

Data is available from 1996 to present.

Includes over 8 million company reports and more than 1.2 million industry reports dating back to 1982. Reports are generally added 1 to 2 weeks after initial publication.

The Mergent Fixed Income Securities Database (FISD) for academia is a comprehensive database of publicly-offered U.S. bonds. ​Mergent Historical Annual Reports contains company annual reports from the U.S., Canada, and other mostly European countries from around the world. Over 1 million annual reports are included, some dating back over 100 years. In some cases when a company did not produce an “Annual Report” the company’s 10K is included instead. And in other cases both the “Annual Report” and the 10K are included. The documents are in pdf format.

The reports cover a variety of sectors including consumer goods, travel and tourism, financial industry, internet industry, retail, and food and drink. Reports discuss market drivers, market size and trends, market segmentation, supply structure, advertising and promotion, retail distribution, consumer characteristics, and market forecasts. Most of the reports are for the USA and  China. Once a product category is chosen, one can use the drop down box in the upper right to choose a country.

Special Note 1: Report sections may be saved or printed out section-by-section, or multiple sections (even from different reports) may be saved into the ‘report basket’ and saved from there as a single merged file

The offices may also have information or forms that all companies including private corporations are required to file to incorporate and or do business within the state.

Information available is highly variable between states and there will likely be restrictions on what information the general public can view.

NielsenIQ and Nielsen Data

The Consumer Panel data, Retail Scanner data, and Ad Intel data sets are only available to tenured or tenure track faculty and PhD Students under their supervision at UNC-Chapel Hill. Please email Researchtools@kenan-flagler.unc.edu for more information and requests for an account.

The Consumer Panel Data

The Consumer Panel Data tracks purchases of a panel of 40,000 to 60,000 households who stay on as long as they meet NielsenIQ’s requirements. The data is collected by in-home scanners describes when, where, and at what price, the panelists made purchases in all 10 Nielsen Food and Non-Food Departments which together account for about 1.4 million UPC codes. Panelists are geographically dispersed and demographically balanced. Each panelist is assigned a projection factor, which enables purchases to be projectable to the entire United States. The data is available starting 2004, with updates being made on an annual basis. Updates are expected to be available in the first quarter of each calendar year

Retail Scanner Data

The Retail Scanner Data consists of weekly pricing, volume, and store merchandising conditions generated by retail store point-of-sale systems from approximately 35,000 participating grocery, drug, mass merchandiser, and other stores from approximately 90 retail chains covering all US markets. Nielsen’s Ad Intel Data cover advertising occurrences for a variety of media types (including National TV, Local TV, Radio, Magazine, Newspaper, FSI (free standing insert), Outdoor, Cinema and Internet/Digital) across the United States. The data can be broken down by Market Code (i.e., ~200 Designated Market Areas (DMAs), which can be matched to DMAs in the Consumer Panel and Retail Scanner datasets).The data is available starting 2010 (internet/digital data is limited until 2017), with updates being made on an annual basis. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) provides common industry definitions for Canada, Mexico, and the United States. And allows for better comparison of economic and financial statistics and ensures that such statistics keep pace with the changing economy. NAICS is a joint development of the U.S. Census Department, the US Economic Classification Policy Committee, Statistics Canada, and Mexico’s Instituto Nacional de Estadistica, Geografia e Informatica. The NAICS system replaces the countries’ separate classification systems with one uniform system for classifying industries. In the United States, NAICS replaces the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system.
